Code of ethics 

 

A Licensed Practical Nurse, as an essential member of the professional health care community is committed to the preservation of life, the prevention of illness, alleviation of suffering and the promotion of health and wellness. By entering and maintaining a commitment to the health care profession, the Licensed Practical Nurse is bound by this code of ethics and must assume a commitment to the health and the well being of clients. The adoption of this code represents a conscious undertaking on the part of Licensed Practical Nurses of Newfoundland and Labrador to be responsible for upholding the following statements:

  • Respect, promote and strive to ensure the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well being of the client

  • Respect the religious, cultural beliefs and practices of the client

  • Function within the ethical and legal guidelines of nursing practice

  • Accept responsibility and accountability for one's own professional practice

  • Work co-operatively and collaboratively with all members of the health care team

  • Accept professional responsibility to ensure knowledge and skills are maintained and to keep informed about issues affecting the practice of nursing

  • Respect without judgement the client's particular health care needs and values

  • Respect the client's dignity and right to make decisions regarding his/her own health care

  • Respect and protect the client's privacy and right to confidentiality except when it puts the client or a third party in danger

  • Accept responsibility for one's own physical and emotional well being that will ensure the provision of safe nursing care

  • Be knowledgeable about one's scope of practice and not engage in procedures which are beyond or are in conflict with one's scope of practice

  • Adhere to professional standards and personal ethics which reflect favourably upon the Licensed Practical Nurse profession and promote its welfare

  • Advocate for the client to ensure that the client receives competent and ethical care
